Hearing

A sound source is vibration (see the ‘what do I hear’ chapter) which is encoded in the cochlea (the auditory inner ear).

These signals (stating whether the sound is loud or soft, high or low, long or short, etc…) are transmitted to the brain via the auditory nerve.

Inside the brain, groups of specialised neurones and the auditory cortex decode the message so that the following perception is as precise as possible.
